I am a fully qualified electrician and an approved contractor from the Elecsa competent contractor scheme.
I test using an annually tested instrument. I record everything in a database in a manner of record keeping that is readily accessible. There will of course be the pass marking on the appliance tested itself plus documentation for record keeping of the tests carried out. This will be mailed after the information is collated for the customers to store either electronically or printed in order for a paper record to be kept.
The PAT testing involves a number of tests, the tests listed below are the most common, but not exhaustive: These tests ensure there is a proper earth, should there be one. The testing of the insulation, to ensure that the user has sufficient insulation between the current conductors. This is a good indicator of the quality of insulation from the conductors to the outer sheathing too. These tests indicates that there has lengths to ensure that the appliance has been tested for any possibility of danger or shock to the user. By carrying out these PAT tests, every possible task that could be carried out to ensure the safety of the workforce using the appliance. The firm cannot be held responsible for not ensuring the safety of its workforce should a fault occur. The exception is if the appliance was tested outside the recommended period for that particular appliance.
PAT Testing or Periodic testing of Portable appliances to ensure that appliances are safe to use by the business’s workforce. Certain items are more vulnerable to damage than others (eg site tools), therefore consideration of risk exposure should determine the periodic testing. Although PAT testing is not the only means to ensure that the workforce is using tools supplied by the business are safe, its a mechanism thats been universally tried and tested.
